Know Your E-Bikes

When purchasing an e-bike, it’s essential to understand its classification to ensure it meets your needs and complies with local regulations. Before buying, check whether the e-bike is Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3, as this determines how the motor operates and where you can legally ride it. Since e-bike laws vary by state and city, research local regulations to ensure your new ride is allowed on bike paths or trails where you plan to ride. We feel that you should buy from a reputable dealer who provides details about the bike’s class, performance, and where you can legally ride the bike.

Electric bikes are categorized into three classes based on their level of motor assistance and speed.

Class 1

Class 1 e-bikes are pedal-assist only, meaning the motor provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and it stops assisting once the bike reaches 20 mph.

Class 2 & 3

Class 2 & 3 e-bikes have a throttle in addition to pedal assist, allowing them to be powered without pedaling, but they are also limited to 20 mph-28 mph These distinctions help determine where e-bikes are allowed to operate under state laws and local regulations.

In Michigan, e-bike regulations align with state and federal guidelines, allowing their use on roads and many trails. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are generally allowed on bike paths, shared-use paths, and linear trails unless a local authority or trail manager prohibits them. However, Class 3 e-bikes are more restricted; they are not permitted on sidewalks or bike paths unless the path is adjacent to a roadway or specifically designated for their use. Riders of Class 3 e-bikes must also be at least 14 years old, and anyone under 18 is required to wear a helmet. The city of Marquette has an ordinance that only allows Class 1 e-bikes — which are pedal-assisted without a throttle and travel up to 20 mph on the city’s bike path.
